Horrific Scenes at Cheltenham as Two More Horses are Killed

Cheltenham’s infamous racecourse claimed the lives of two more horses at this year’s Festival. On this third day of racing, eight-year-old Toe The Line (IRE) was put down after breaking her leg in the 4.50pm Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.

In the last race of the day, 10-year-old gelding, Hadrian’s Approach (IRE), was killed after breaking his leg.

Yesterday, five-year-old gelding Consul De Thaix broke his neck in an horrific fall. In his dying throes, other horses repeatedly kicked him as they tried to avoid his stricken body.

The deaths today bring the total number of horses killed at the Festival to 56 since the year 2000.

Says Animal Aid Director, Isobel Hutchinson:

We are deeply saddened that two more horses have been killed in the name of entertainment. It is unthinkable that, in a modern world, a “sport” which costs animals their lives is simply allowed to continue. Year after year, horses die and suffer at the Cheltenham Festival and yet no one is properly held to account. We would urge anyone thinking of placing a bet on the last day of the Festival not to support this cruel and exploitative activity.

Tow the Line is the second fatality of this week’s festival, following the death of Consul De Thaix after a harrowing fall yesterday. (see below)
